Competition Entry Northwich
The basic configuration of programme elements establishes a space between spaces of performance, coordination / service and public participation. Blocks are arranged in dialogue with the immediate and distant site. The largest performance block relates to the river, the participation block is aligned to address a new urban space with a south west orientation and the coordination block (housing the institutional spaces) faces north and north west orientated towards the proposed new commercial developments.
Organisation of the section develops the central vertical space which flows between the new urban datum established by the flood level: public ground, ascending through art space then performance space to ideal space: the cloister. The cloister is arranged around a roof light illuminating the main vertical circulation route and acts as a small gallery extension, and also provides views of sky and the hill to the north.
Set between cloister (ideal space) and public ground, the main auditorium mediates between daily life and the ideal.
Ground floor is conceived as a broad open territory with hard edges defined by service spaces and soft edges providing links to the river, new urban space to the south and access to the north west.
Upper levels build on the basic configuration with the interstices between the key spaces providing strategic views in and out of the building.
